Picture: Michael FrogleyTHE Uniting Church in Wagga has strengthened its commitment to the community with the opening of a $2.7 million building at Glenfield Park that it wants to share with others.

The Pilgrim Uniting Church in Tanda Place, opposite the South City shopping centre, includes not only a 140-seat worship area, but also office space for UnitingCare Ageing and several multi-purpose rooms and a kitchen.

“We built a multi-purpose facility so it can be used for worship on Sundays, but during the week it can be used for a whole range of activities,” the chairman of Wagga Uniting Church, Glenn Elliott-Rudder, said.

“We want the building to be used, we don’t want it to be just a place that is used for a few hours on Sunday.

“We want to be part of the Glenfield Park and wider community.

“We want the community to feel they are part of this church, and that we are not separate and we have deliberately located our services close to where people live.”

The church is hoping non-government agencies and community groups will take advantage of the building’s facilities, which include state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment.

Already, a playgroup has met in Pilgrim Uniting Church this week.

“We had 17 children and parents and had three new families join the group,” the church’s minister, Reverend Mosese Taufa, said.

UnitingCare Ageing will move in next week.

It’s office accommodates five staff, who perform the management, supervision and administration functions to maintain 40 support workers in the Riverina.

UnitingCare Ageing administers 120 aged care packages and has another 30 Veteran’s Affairs clients in the area.

“Because we will have more physical space, we can expand our services and tender for more projects,” service manager, Janelle Barlow, said.

Mr Elliott-Rudder said the Pilgrim Uniting Church was designed with no steps or ramps to promote inclusiveness.

And there is lots of glass to promote a sense of openness.
