An injured 26-year-old man has been charged with murder after spending two days under police guard in a Melbourne hospital.

The man had been arrested in Warragul, about 100 kilometres east of Melbourne, following the discovery of another man’s body on Wednesday morning.

Paramedics had been called to the Churchill Street address after reports a man had been stabbed.

A 59-year-old man was declared dead at the scene.

Police initially did not believe the younger man was seriously hurt, but his condition deteriorated while in custody and he was airlifted to Melbourne, where his injuries were reassessed.

Homicide detectives interviewed him about the older man’s death on Friday morning. He was subsequently charged with one count of murder.

The 26-year-old, from Warragul, will face the Melbourne Magistrates Court later on Friday.
