They’ll take advantage of Dubbo City Council’s free annual kerbside clean-up for bulky rubbish, which will continue next week.

Last year residents discarded 635 tonnes of old furniture, broken whitegoods, tree trimmings and more from their homes.

Crews from contractor JR Richards and Sons will move into town next, with residents from the first urban zone requested to have their bulky waste out by Sunday.

Council civil infrastructure and solid waste management manager Michael McCulloch has the task of co-ordinating the clean-up.

“I’ve seen quite a bit out already, mainly green waste and some other items, which is good,” he said.

The clean-up suggests many Dubbo residents want to fight a battle against clutter.

“They take the opportunity for sure – it’s a very popular service council provides and it’s well patronised,” Mr McCulloch said.

One of the conditions of the clean-up is that it must be out no earlier than seven days before the date indicated for each particular zone.

“We encourage people to put their waste out as close as possible to the date… (to avoid) issues with it being disturbed by wind or dogs,” Mr McCulloch said.

There is a limit of the equivalent of one level box trailer load or one cubic metre of waste per household for the free service.

Larger quantities will only be removed if requested by the resident and at a cost of $150 per cubic metre to the resident.

Green waste should be separated from other garbage and Mr McCulloch asked people to tie green waste into bundles and place grass clippings and leaves in a cardboard box. Whitegoods and other metal items should be placed in a separate heap for collection because they can be recycled.

Chemical poisons, paint and other hazardous liquid wastes should not be included – an annual drop-off service at the showground for them is scheduled for October 25.
